Deep tissue is the massage people ask for when something just won't let go: a tight band across the shoulders, a low back that aches by Friday, an old knot that keeps coming back.

It's also the one people are nervous about, usually because they've heard it's painful. Here's a straight explanation of what it is, who it suits, and what to expect.

What it actually is

Deep tissue is slower and firmer than a relaxing massage. Instead of long, light strokes over the surface, the therapist works into the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around it. The pace is deliberate, and the pressure builds gradually rather than all at once.

The aim isn't to "hurt." It's to reach the muscle that a lighter massage skims over, and to give tight, overworked tissue a reason to release.

Who it's for

If you mostly want to relax and drift off, deep tissue probably isn't your first pick. A Swedish or aroma therapy massage will suit you better. Deep tissue is for when you have a specific complaint you want worked on.

What it feels like

You'll feel firm pressure, and on the really tight spots there's a kind of "good hurt", the sort that makes you exhale rather than flinch. It should never be sharp or unbearable. Tell your therapist if it's too much; the pressure is easy to dial up or down, and a good therapist is checking with you anyway.

Pressure should make you breathe out, not tense up. If you're gritting your teeth, say so and we'll ease off.

Afterwards

It's normal to feel a little tender the next day, a bit like you've had a good workout. Drink some water, move around gently, and it settles within a day. By day two most people feel noticeably looser than before.
